CAWRA - Adelaides new recycling plant

Zero Waste Co. got invited to take a look at the new state-of-the-art $23.2m Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Kilburn, just north of Adelaide this week.

So off I toddled to the new facility bright and early on Tuesday morning to check it out. And I can say it's a pretty impressive building! It looks very modern and technoligically advanced and the processing plant certainly doesn't let you down on that side as well!

It's a relatively small plant to what I was expecting, but that's good - I think the carpark has a bigger footprint than what the recycling machine takes up - I guess good things do come in small packages.

But a bit about the plant...

In a first for South Australia, the MRF will include a modern and interactive education centre incorporating a full-length glass viewing wall and an elevated walkway, which will give school and community groups a unique close-up view of the entire recycling process.

Owned by the Central Adelaide Waste and Recycling Authority (CAWRA) - pronounced cor-rah, is a joint initiative of the Cities of Charles Sturt and Port Adelaide Enfield, includes the latest in optical sorting technology to produce clean commodities ideal for developing local markets.

City of Port Adelaide Enfield Mayor, Claire Boan, said: “The MRF is going to be of great economic value to our local businesses. Finding ways to recycle our waste and transform it into everyday products is good for businesses and diverting waste from landfill is good for the environment.”

All-in-all it's a great looking plant and will be able to process 50,000 tonnes of recyclables per year from household yellow bins! So that's a definite win!!

Here's some photos from inside the plant (courtesy of John Nieddu Photography)...
