Composting food waste for your FOGO

Composting food waste for your FOGO

If this is going to be something new for you, there are a few things that you should probably know…

  1. Don’t empty food scraps directly into the bin (in the summer it will take about a day or two and it’s going to start smelling really bad!)
  2. Use a compostable (make sure it’s certified compostable and not biodegradable) bag to put your food scraps in. We recommend BioBag (some of their bags are made right here in Adelaide!).
  3. Use a bin caddy or similar (there are loads out there, just search for compostable bin caddy) and you should be able to find a nice small one for your kitchen bench. BioBag sell kitchen caddies and kits.
  4. It’s a good idea to put something like newspaper, paper towels or even tissues* in the bottom of the bin liner before putting it in the caddy. This will help to soak up any liquid that comes from your food waste and help to prevent the bag from breaking when you empty it.
  5. It’s also a good idea to put newspaper in the bottom of your FOGO bin as this can help with soaking up liquid and keeping your bin cleaner and also prevent any liquid from emptying into the dump truck.
  6. Whatever you do, do not use a plastic bag for your food waste if you are going to put it into your FOGO bin. This will contaminate the compost, always use certified compostable bags that have one or both of these logos. Any other type of bag has plastic in it and will contaminate the compost soil.

  1. Keep your compost caddy bin away from direct sunlight or heat as this can increase the speed at which the bag will start to degrade.
  2. Depending on the amount of moisture in the bin liner and the heat, a bin liner should last around 3 to 4 days.

Thanks for taking the time to read our blog and just for you, we're giving away free expired mailer bags in packs of 25 that you can use for caddie bin liners!
