World Rivers Day - September 22

Dear River Advocates,

World Rivers Day, September 22, is upon us. Thousands of events are scheduled around the world in more than 70 countries – and the diversity of the festivities is both amazing and inspiring – from Whitehorse, Yukon, where conservation groups and 5 First Nations will celebrate the land use plan for the immense Peel River Watershed (which protects 83% of the area) – to New Zealand, with an array of events such as the major gathering organized by the Drinkable Rivers Team in Christchurch and the major photographic competition organized by the Opawaho Heathcote River Network in Canterbury – to the beautiful nature island of Dominica, and its 365 rivers, now in the midst of planting 1 million trees in the run-up to World Rivers Day.

As listed earlier, the list of activities across the globe goes on and on, spanning 6 continents, with events ranging from stream clean-ups and habitat restoration activities – to educational programs and community riverside celebrations – to the launch of river-related websites, new river conservation campaigns and new films. It’s shaping up to be an incredible weekend for rivers around the world.

If you want to share photos and thoughts about the weekend, you can use the hashtags #worldriversday and #riversday – as well as tag us using @oneriverworld in your post on Twitter – or @riverworld on Facebook. As well, below are our Twitter and Facebook links. We’ll distribute one more update this coming Friday.

Thank you again for your great efforts on behalf of our rivers.

With best wishes, Mark Angelo, WRD Chair
